Quote Posts are thoughts and reflections that come to me when making quote images for social media. There is always a reason why a quote resonates with me, and I decided I wanted to share my observations with you. Many quotes are about design, but some are not, even if applicable on design and designers as well. Would love to hear what you think.
Alina Wheeler: Design is intelligence made visible.
Alina Wheeler is a visual branding expert and a great source of knowledge and inspiration in her field.
What I perceive from this quote is that she talks about how design is able to SHOW & EXPLAIN connection, causation, intension and plans in a visual manner. When visualised our communications are perceived faster and easier than when it is only explained in words.
This quote also makes me reflect on how Design literally can POINT out the road ahead. Just think of traffic signs, airport signage or your own smartphone. We use visual signals everywhere to navigate in our everyday life.
Design means a plan or intention.
To do something “by design” means that we do something on purpose and that we have a plan behind the action. A plan gets clearer if it has a defined structure.
Structure ASKS to be visualized. Structure is the #1 building block of graphic design. Graphic Design will make a hierarchy of importance visible and is able to differentiate and show connections in a very effective way.
Good websites are great examples of this. Bad websites do not leverage the structuring abilities of Graphic Design, only the decorative and entertaining attributes (entertaining for the web designers that is.)
We know that visual expressions are perceived faster and remembered longer than verbal ones.
If you want your core message to be SEEN, UNDERSTOOD and REMEMBERED, it is a great idea to turn to a graphic designer for help.
What is more easily understood; the drawing above or this text:
A circle is a simple closed shape. It is the set of all points in a plane that are at a given distance from a given point, the center; equivalently it is the curve traced out by a point that moves in a plane so that its distance from a given point is constant.
Alina Wheeler has written the book:
“Designing Brand Identity” which is highly recommendable.
